PMQs special

"I mean, what were they even talking about?" - Respondent to Hansard's inquiry into PMQs

Sorry for the late delivery folks, we wanted to get our verdict on the first PMQs of the new parliament in before the newsletter went off. Harriet Harman has a tough challenge standing in as leader over the summer. She's immensely talented, but she struggled in this role after the last election - a period when the Tories and Lib Dems constructed a public perception that Labour were to blame for the deficit. Harman was bland during PMQs in 2010. She failed to translate her parliamentary confidence into a successful bearpit performance. Does it look like she'll do any better this time around? Check out Adam's verdict to find out.

Meanwhile, we look at troubling new plans to strip parents of the right to launch a judicial review when their local school is turned into an academy. Nicky Morgan, the education secretary, seems intent on turning any struggling school over to the new model, despite a lack of evidence about improved standards. As part of her mission, she's stripping many of the legal powers people had to restrict government action.

Charles Kennedy 1959-2015 - Politics.co.uk

"I will go out of this world feet first with my Lib Dem membership card in my pocket" - Charles Kennedy
View this email in your browser

Charles Kennedy 1959 -2015

Most public figures receive positive obituaries, but there has been a particular warmth to the tributes paid to former Lib Dem leader Charles Kennedy this morning. Kennedy's friendly and generous nature meant that he was a widely liked figure both at Westminster and among the general public. However, it was perhaps his political judgement that he should be best remembered for. On all the big decisions of his career, from the war in Iraq, to the coalition with the Conservatives, history will judge Kennedy as having made the right and the brave call.

Elsewhere, we hear the case for reform of our voting system from a rather unlikely source - students at a Chinese university. For these students, the deeply disproportionate result in this year's general election was enough to put them off the idea of democracy altogether.

Battle of the Beanfield

"I realise I will always be the poster child for police brutality, but I can try to use that as a positive force for healing and restraint" - Rodney King
View this email in your browser
Thirty years ago today, a large group of travellers were attacked by police on their way to a festival in Stonehenge. Women and children were assaulted in a bloody and violent event which has now been all-but-forgotten by the mainstream of British society. In a hard-hitting investigation, we talk to the Earl of Cardigan, a self-confessed "card-carrying Tory" on the sights he saw that day and the violence he observed being inflicted by police on people with no means of defence.

We also feature a report on the Manchester based movement against homelessness, which is sparking a new nationwide campaign to help those pushed onto the streets by benefit cuts. Elsewhere, we investigate whether Liz Kendall's call for white working class kids in the north to be prioritised in educational initiatives is racist and take a peek at some of the products in your home which could be banned by the psychoactive substances bill.
