Richmond byelection shock: Theresa May’s Brexit weakness revealed

"This was a remarkable, come-from-nowhere upset that will terrify the Conservatives" - Tim Farron

Hello there, we have some news. Firstly, the Lib Dems have won a shock byelection victory in Richmond. And secondly, this is the last daily newsletter for a while.

The byelection might be considered more important in the great scheme of things, so let's start there.

In a year of political shocks, the Richmond result may not be earth-shattering but our first piece today suggests it does reveal the prime minister's weakness over Brexit. It argues that although her polling remains strong, Theresa May's position is extremely precarious and this result offers a glimpse at the reality of her predicament.

So, could it mean that we will avoid a hard Brexit after all? Our next article suggests that if it does we'll end up being very grateful to Zac Goldsmith.

But if our final piece today is anything to go by, it's not quite time to get the anti-Brexit bubbly out of the fridge just yet. It argues that while many people will be hoping that Sarah Olney's spectacular win might point the way to further such results, it's unlikely to happen on any large scale.

And now about that newsletter. We're making a few changes to the way the website operates. One of the main ones is to focus more of our resources on longer, thoroughly researched pieces. We'll still have quick-turnaround blogs and news stories of course, but with our focus on longer pieces, we've decided to power down the daily newsletter for the time being.

We know that for many of you the newsletter is part of your daily routine, and we're really sorry if this is inconvenient. But we'll be focusing our resources on making sure we have ground-breaking stories for you on the site whenever you check in. We'll also be migrating you over to our new and improved weekly newsletter which will be sent out on a Friday lunchtime and will bring you all the pieces we wrote over the course of the week. You'll still be getting all our coverage straight to your inbox, it'll just be coming once a week rather than once a day.

If by any chance you don't want to receive that newsletter, let us know. Otherwise, we hope you like the changes. We'll still be providing the incisive, independent, hard-hitting journalism you're used to, just at a slightly altered timetable.

Thanks for your understanding, and see you next Friday for the first Politics @ Friday Lunch.
