Burnham suggests time is not right for a female leader

"There is no act of treachery or meanness of which a political party is not capable, for in politics there is no honour." - Benjamin Disraeli

Today we cover comments made by Andy Burnham in which he appeared to suggest the time is not right for a female Labour leader. Asked during a hustings for BBC Radio 5 Live whether it would be great for the party to have a woman leader, he replied: "When the time is right, when the right leader comes along".

We also look at what impact the surge of support for Jeremy Corbyn is having on the London Labour mayoral hopefuls. With an influx of new members in the capital we ask which candidate stands to gain the most from Corbynmania.

Elsewhere, we report that Caroline Lucas' talk of a possible electoral pact between the Greens and a Corbyn-led Labour party has been played down by her party. A Green party source told Politics.co.uk that Lucas was expressing a 'personal opinion' which is unlikely to be adopted as party policy. However they do they say they remain open to working across party lines.

Deportations of Afghans continue

"Fairness is what justice really is." - Potter Stewart
View this email in your browser

This morning we look at the deportations of Afghans back to their home country. Lawyers have managed to save many deportees but more could be scheduled on a flight to leave the UK tomorrow. With Afghanistan's minister for refugees telling European governments that 80% of his country is still unsafe, should questions be asked as to why Theresa May seems hellbent on pressing ahead with the deportations?

Elsewhere, we report on a video which appears to show a boy with autism being punched by a police officer. The teenager's mother said she was shocked and upset by the footage and will be taking legal action. Northamptonshire police have launched an investigation into the allegations.

Pick of the week: Corbyn, coups and coalitions

"Going from underdog to top dog is exciting, but it comes with problems." - Gary Linden
View this email in your browser

The weekend is nearly here and we've selected our top five stories for you to catch up on at your leisure. Here's what we have for you this week:

  •  The report that says e-cigarettes are far healthier than smoking. With many people actually believing the opposite is true we suggest the anti-vaping campaigners who promote this misinformation are a threat to public health.
  • A piece from a Green MEP who insists Jeremy Corbyn is not a magic path back to victory for the Labour party. She says the party must embrace the idea of a Red-Green coalition if they wish to return to power.
  • A story about new advice from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs on the scope and definitions of the psychoactive substances bill. They have clearly tried to make the proposals plausible but it is unlikely that the bill will ever make much sense.
  •  News that a blogger who sent tweets criticising some Labour councils has been banned from voting in the leadership election.
  • And a piece by Ken Livingstone who says it is the Labour right who are out of touch, not Jeremy Corbyn.
