John McDonnell and George Galloway talk to Politics.co.uk

"I care about public perception, yes. I don't care about my enemies' perception" - George Galloway

Is it Galloway back for George?

Today we carry interviews with two big and controversial figures on the left of British politics. First up is the former MP George Galloway who discusses his potential return to Labour under Jeremy Corbyn. Galloway, who is currently standing to become mayor of London, retains a close interest in Scottish politics and claims that discussions previously took place for his return to the Labour fold under the then leadership of Jim Murphy.

One politician who may have a say in the matter is the current shadow chancellor John McDonnell. McDonnell was in fiery form this weekend, telling Politics.co.uk that there remains a "right-wing" and "conservative" wing of the Labour party that has failed to adjust to Corbyn's leadership. He also comes out swinging against the BBC and other sections of the media for allegedly trying to damage Corbyn's leadership.

Finally we have a piece analysing the life of David Bowie who it was announced today has passed away from cancer. The piece argues that Bowies' life was a beacon for the fluidity of identity in youth and stands in opposition to the current rigid nature of identity politics spreading across campuses in the UK.

Time for the left to see the EU for what it is

"As politicians we have to react to the fact that many people do not feel that they can relate to the EU." - Angela Merkel
View this email in your browser

It's almost instinctive for many on the left to support the EU, or at least, to not want to be on the same side as campaigns run by right-wing groups to leave it. But is this still the right position for those who say they believe in fairness and democracy?

Our lead piece today suggests not, and points to the handling of Greece and a commitment to austerity as reasons why it's time for the left to see the EU for what it really is.

The French government's assault on liberty

"We must scrupulously guard the civil rights and civil liberties of all of our citizens, whatever their background." - Franklin D. Roosevelt
View this email in your browser

Liberty, equality, and fraternity have long been the cornerstones of French society but the terror attacks the country suffered this year seemed designed to challenge these very values.

One year on from the Charlie Hebdo attacks, we have a piece which looks at the impact of the shocking events, and examines the response from the government. It finds that French liberty is now more at risk from the state than it is from terrorists.

Elsewhere, we report on a new poll which shows that Labour's Sadiq Khan is on course for a landslide victory over his Conservative rival Zac Goldsmith, in the London mayoral race. But does Khan really have it in the bag? Some are not quite so sure.
