Council plans ban on 'annoying' public speakers and mobility scooters

"When did banning anything, ever work?" - Brad Stine
View this email in your browser

Since the introduction of Public Space Protection Orders in 2014, we've seen councils ban begging, gathering in groups, and even swearing. Today we report on the latest local authority to consider a raft of draconian proposals under the use of these powers.

Enfield Council has launched a public consultation into plans which would see 'annoying' public speakers, certain mobility scooters and rough-sleepers all banned from the area.

The fake patriotism of the Faragists is poisoning this country

"Leave the word 'patriotism' for your efforts to make this country a kinder, more egalitarian place, and one that is less dangerous to the rest of the world." - Barbara Ehrenreich

Yesterday, white supremacist Thomas Mair was found guilty of killing the Labour MP Jo Cox. Now with the trial over, our first piece today suggests it's time to realise that pushing a politics of fear and resentment against immigrants has real and sometimes fatal consequences. It argues that true patriotism involves an honest assessment of what is both great and what is ugly about our culture.

Elsewhere, we have a piece which suggests that the government's new porn bill could have serious implications for individual privacy.

We also look at the OBR's estimate that Brexit cuts to immigration will cost the UK billions every year.

And, if you missed our analysis of yesterday's Autumn Statement, you can catch up with it here.
