Home Office in turmoil following asylum ruling

Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution - Universal Declaration of Human Rights, article 14

A ruling from the court of appeal has thrown the government's asylum processing system into disarray. Ministers had hoped today's case would overturn an earlier judgement by the high court which found the detained fast-track system to be unlawful. Hundreds of asylum-seekers have already been released since the suspension of the process in June.

Elsewhere, the chief prison inspector has issued a stark warning to Michael Gove about overcrowding in prisons. Will Gove listen or will he be too worried about being seen as soft on crime?

And we take a look at the surge in support of Jeremy Corbyn and suggest that despite the polls putting him way ahead of Liz Kendall, there is a thing or two he could learn from her.

Lord Sewel has been judged and found guilty in the court of public opinion

"We are defining the boundaries of normality by tearing apart the people outside it." - Jon Ronson
View this email in your browser
Unsurprisingly, Lord Sewel has today resigned. As the pressure mounted, it seemed impossible for him to do anything other than quit the House of Lords. But what has been demonstrated in the last couple of days is that rules and law don't matter. What matters is whatever the press and the public demand.

Elsewhere, the court of appeal has allowed a case to go ahead on the impact of cuts to legal aid on prisoners. Campaigners are particularly concerned by the removal of legal aid for mothers separated from their babies, children and disabled prisoners requiring a support package for release and mentally ill prisoners held in isolation.

What Lord Sewel gets up to is none of our business

"Scandal is gossip made tedious by morality" - Oscar Wilde
View this email in your browser
The summer silly season is upon us and with a shortage of proper news, the tabloids are feasting over the revelation that Lord Sewel has been filmed taking cocaine with prostitutes. Humiliating for him and his family? Yes. But this has little bearing on his political morality, so is it really any of our business?

Elsewhere, we look at the truth behind the cost of prisons. With Michael Gove facing up to 40% cuts to his department it is likely he will look to privatisation of certain services as a possible solution. But statistics published by Gove's own department show private prisons actually cost the taxpayer more than state prisons.
