Ukip donor accused of misusing data

It is scrutiny by the general public that keeps the powerful honest." - Heather Brooke View this email in your browser As Ukip members gather in Doncaster for their annual conference today, their biggest donor and head of the umbrella campaign to leave the EU, Aaron Banks, was accused of mususing personal data. This morning Banks told the Today programe that Leave.EU has signed up almost 100,000 people in just five weeks. However, we uncover evidence the group may have broken data protection and privacy regulations in order to do so. Elsewhere, we hear from Jasmin Stone from the Focus E15 campaign on why Jeremy Corbyn's pledge to tackle social cleansing does not fill them with hope. They say he must acknowledge his own party's record on this issue if he is to be taken seriously by housing campaigners and activists. We also have a piece from the chief executive of Freedom from Torture which calls on the government to provide specialist support to Syrian refugees arriving in the UK who have experienced torture. The forgotton faces of the Calais refugee camp

In a piece written by the director of Migrant Voice we hear the stories of people who have made the perilous trip across the Mediterranean and through Europe in search of a better life. The writer points out that as we head towards winter the already difficult conditions in Calais will only get worse and calls for Europe to have a unified approach to the crisis with humanity at the heart of it. Elsewhere, we have our verdict on Tim Farron's speech to the Lib Dem conference yesterday. We suggest the new leader missed a chance to make a clear break with the past and take the first steps towards changing damaged perceptions of the party. It was delivered brilliantly but as was clear from earlier briefings this was a continuity Clegg speech and we conclude terribly misguided. We also carry a report on a mass eviction of housing activists in north London. In protest against the sell of social housing, campaigners have been occupying empty homes on the Sweets Way estate for the past six months. But early yesterday morning bailiffs moved on to the estate to start removing them.
